Northern Lights

I thought I was dreaming when I awoke at 2:00 in the morning to the phone ringing.  Oh, great, I thought.  Do I really want to answer a two-in-the-morning call?

"You have to go outside right now," my friend said.

"What's out there?"

"The northern lights are like I have never seen them before.  I'm up on Brockway.  You have to go outside."

"Okay, I'll check."  Click.

So Aaron and I put on some shoes and walked down to the Harbor Haus dock to see the show.  It was a good one: mostly green and white, but all the way across the horizon, and all the way up above our heads.  I have never seen them fill the sky like that before.  I wished I could be looking in all places at once!

They did the shooting up motion like towers, the spreading across the sky and (one I've never gotten to see) the shimmer.  Oh, the shimmer is cool.  It's honestly like a disco -- so scattered and blinking in all different places.  The show had its peaks and its lulls.  All in all, a very worth while show to get me out of bed.  We were out for probably 20 minutes before it died down.

Another great part about sitting under da Keweenaw sky is the stars.  They were twinkling bright where the clouds didn't cover.  We both saw a few shooting stars.  Do you know what the best part of seeing the shooting stars is for me?  The fact of knowing that I don't need to make a wish.

Northern Lights and a Book Well Written

Guess who was out Saturday night: the Northern Lights!  Some friends and I watched them at about midnight from my new porch.  What a glorious sight.  They were the white ones that did slow shooting peaks higher and higher as they spread horizontally across the sky.  The moon was smiling on us too.  What a night!

All is well, otherwise.  Not too many visitors in da Harbor during this week.  It's kind of that lull time before school is out.  Plus the weather has had periodic storms.  It's nice to have the rain, but not if you're camping!

I do want to tell you that I finished writing my book.  As far as I'm concerned, at the moment, I plan to call it "Slices of da Harbor.  Copper Harbor, Michigan" because it's from the perspective of so many people, places and things around the area.  I hate to say that the project is on the back burner since other schedules have taken over, but I'm proud that I got it written before my creative juices are squirting elsewhere.

My next step is finding a publisher, and I have some ideas to query.  As far as printing quantities go, if you know of any one (business or other), who would be interested in multiple copies of such a book, please let me know, so I can estimate the quantity amount.  I'm really excited about this project, and I hope you are too!

Okay, I better hit the sack.  Another busy day tomorrow!

Up in the Sky

Hello! Sorry I missed you for so long... it must be summer. And August at that! Yay! Welcome August... one month closer to October.

I think I've got all the berries my freezer can handle this year. Thimbles, bils, blues, sugar plums and even buffaloberries. Most of them are on their way out, so I'm glad I got out when I could. Blueberry picking for me was slim today. But I have enough Sugar Plums to make 5 gallons of wine! Come see me this winter for a Harbor shine!

The last two nights have rocked the Northern Lights. Last night I went out to the lighthouse, on the north-facing rocks, and watched them light up the sky. I have never seen a show like that before. The lights themselves were white. They shot up like poles in the sky all along the horizon. They faded in and out, back and forth. I couldn't help but oooh and ahhh. A kid at the fireworks. They should be out tonight too, around 11 pm. If you have a view, I suggest you keep your eyes peeled.

And right on the Superior shore, the crashing waves were the loudest sound. The wind blew through me, carrying any worries with it. Quite a few times this summer I have sat with friends or myself after a busy night at work and watched the sky. The shooting stars have been abundant, and the northern lights were a spectacular treat. Watching the bright orange moon rise never ceases to amaze me. Oh the joys of the summer nights.

With all this magic in the air, I feel so fortunate. One thing I realized, and this is the first time I have ever felt this way in my life, was a message from the shooting stars. Often we think they are there for us to make a wish. But lately, I realized I have nothing to wish for. My dreams are coming true on my own accord. That's even better than October.
